What Is Smoke Clearance Testing?
Smoke clearance testing measures how effectively your extraction system removes airborne contaminants. It involves filling the space with artificial smoke, timing how quickly it’s cleared, and visually inspecting for leaks or inefficiencies.
This test is especially important in spray booths, where stagnant air and eddies can allow hazardous particles to linger around walls or working zones.
HSE 261 & Legal Requirements
The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) recommends that smoke clearance tests be carried out every 14 months, in line with LEV COSHH testing (HSE 261 & HSG258). Testing helps confirm that air handling systems are effectively removing fumes and ensuring the safety of workers.
✅ C-Air Filtration provides both smoke clearance and LEV testing in a single visit.
Our Smoke Clearance Testing Process
Here’s how the test works:
- Extraction switched off, lighting on
- Smoke machine activated for 2 minutes
- Room reaches “white-out” condition
- Extraction system switched on
- Timer starts
- Visual inspection of ducting and seals for leakage
- Time measured until full smoke clearance
- Certificate issued for on-site display & compliance records
Tests can be done during your normal shutdowns or at weekends. We operate nationwide.
When and Where Smoke Testing Is Needed
Smoke clearance testing is commonly required for:
- Spray booths (downdraft and cross-draft)
- Enclosed LEV systems
- Paint mixing rooms
- Areas handling flammable or hazardous substances
- Newly installed or modified extraction systems

Smoke clearance testing is essential for ensuring safety in buildings. This process evaluates the effectiveness of smoke control systems during a fire. It plays a crucial role in maintaining visibility and breathable air for occupants. Moreover, it aids firefighters in navigating buildings efficiently.
Smoke control systems are designed to limit the spread of smoke and maintain safe evacuation routes. These systems include smoke vents, pressurisation fans, and exhaust systems. During a smoke clearance test, these components are assessed to ensure they function as intended in an emergency.
Smoke clearance testing is vital for multiple reasons. First, it ensures compliance with safety regulations. The HSE mandate these tests to verify that smoke control systems work properly. Additionally, it protects lives by maintaining clear escape routes during emergencies. Without effective smoke clearance, smoke can quickly obscure visibility and hinder evacuation efforts.
Another critical aspect is the protection of property. Smoke can cause extensive damage to building contents, leading to significant financial losses. Effective smoke clearance systems help minimise this damage by controlling the spread of smoke. Furthermore, smoke clearance testing can reveal weaknesses in the building’s design or system, allowing for improvements before a real emergency occurs.
Regular smoke clearance testing offers numerous benefits. Primarily, it enhances the safety of building occupants. By ensuring that smoke control systems are working correctly, the risk of smoke-related injuries is minimised. Additionally, it helps maintain compliance with local fire safety codes, avoiding potential fines or legal issues.
Another benefit is the reassurance it provides to building owners and occupants. Knowing that the smoke control system has been tested and is functioning correctly gives peace of mind. It also demonstrates a commitment to safety, which can be a significant factor in attracting and retaining tenants.
Regular testing can also extend the lifespan of the smoke control system. Identifying and addressing minor issues early can prevent them from becoming major problems. This proactive maintenance approach can save money in the long run by reducing repair and replacement costs.
HSG261 mandates that spray booth ventilation systems undergo a smoke clearance test every 14 months. This requirement aligns with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations, which aim to protect workers from health risks arising from hazardous substances in the workplace.
